Masterclass with Dr Norman Amundson

Metaphor Making: Your Career, Your Life, Your Way

In this class Dr. Amundson will explore how to effectively use metaphors in career guidance using principles and activities from his new book: Metaphor Making. The discussion will include the underlying theoretical foundations of this approach as well as some limitations. The intervention exercises will focus on 1. Client Initiated Metaphors - using drawings, extension and time-line; 2. Counsellor Responsive Metaphors - a form of active listening and offering encouragement and challenges; and 3. Counsellor Initiated Metaphoric Exercises - using perspectives of others, parallel imagery, physical representations, and group input. There also will be a discussion of how to use metaphors in supervision as part of a case conceptualization approach. Multiple career related metaphors will be introduced (40 metaphors) and an exercise for personal exploration using this spectrum of possibilities will be outlined.

Venue: Hilton Adelaide

Inclusions: Morning tea, Lunch, Afternoon tea

PD Field Trip (details to be finalised)

We have to apply a minimum number to this event of 20 registered delegates. A decision will be made on whether to progress, in early March. If it is cancelled, the registration fee will be refunded.

This will be an opportunity to visit three sites to investigate how they practise sustainability. While details are to be finalised, it is proposed for a 9am departure and returning around 5pm, in time for the Welcome function. The proposed trip will include the following:

Salisbury Council wetlands. Polluted stormwater is filtered through the reedbeds and ponds. They are experimenting with pumping the cleaned water into the great underground reservoirs beneath the northern Adelaide plains. This summer, the Council will conservatively save $70,000 in excess water bills by pumping it up again and onto the picnic and sporting grounds.

Divine Ripe market garden - This is totally high- technical site is one of Australia's largest tomato truss greenhouses.

A Barossa Valley winery (yet to be finalised)

Transport, morning tea and lunch will be included.

Cost ( GST inc) $160 conference registrants   $180 other participants
