Masterclass with Prof Mark Savickas - Tuesday 26 April 2011 (9.00am-12.00pm)
Career Counselling for Life Design in a Multicultural World
Many counsellors are innovating their practices by taking a narrative turn. This shift in practice has been prompted by changes in the social organization of work and occupations. To respond to these changes, some counselors have turned to narrative models and methods because this approach emphasizes life design as a framework for occupational choice. In this master class, participants will learn about “life designing” as a new general model for career counseling and practice its associated methods for constructing career stories, deconstructing life themes, reconstructing character arcs, and co-constructing life portraits that extend the occupational plot to the next scenario. Participants will learn how to integrate these techniques into their ongoing practice and may even use the techniques to better understand why they became advisors and counselors and how they use their own occupations to manifest their career themes and character arc.
Sharing strategies to support the lone practitioner - Tuesday 26 April 2011(1.00pm-4.00pm)
Chairs: Wanda Hayes and Shauna Quinlivan
Working as a private practitioner in your own business or as a sole provider within an organisation or corporation creates a unique set of personal and professional challenges. We invite private practice and corporate career practitioners to join this session and discuss issues such as the role of the private practitioner, the role of the practitioner in the corporate setting, establishing and building relationships between private and corporate practice, identifying the challenges facing career practitioners and the true value of professional collegiality across the sectors. During the session strategies will be identified that help maximise the rewards and address the challenges that come from working as an independent practitioner.
