Convention Educational Tours
In the spirit of the 2011 GPET Convention Fringe Festival program stream, we are pleased to offer delegates the opportunity to participate in one of two offsite activities at the National Gallery of Australia. Please note places for both experiences are limited and participation is on a first-in first-served basis. For this reason delegates may only register for one experience – either the guided tour or the artmed session. Please select carefully and in consideration of the concurrent sessions in the program.
The two experiences available are:
Guided tour of the New Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Galleries: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander curators from the National Gallery of Australia will conduct tours of the Gallery’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collection. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art collection comprises over 7500 works and is the largest in the world. The collection is now displayed in eleven new galleries opened in September 2010. Each gallery focuses on a different geographic region of Australia.
artmed session: In small groups delegates will be lead by a Gallery educator to view and contemplate one or two works of art, which relate closely to a particular health or medical topic. The Gallery educator will facilitate comprehensive discussion to help expand delegates’conceptual abilities. These sessions aim to encourage the development of observational skills – essential for those involved in medical education and training. At a deeper level, the sessions affirm the potential for art to intersect with the medical world.
The artmed sessions are based on an existing Gallery program run with Australian National University Medical School students.
The four artmed topics are:
- Mental health
- Globalisation of medicine
- Doctor health and well-being
- Breaking bad news
The topic and artwork discussed will be determined by the Gallery educator, delegates will be allocated to a group and topic on arrival at the Gallery – pre-selection of a particular topic is not possible. Session times for both options are:
1. Guided tour OR artmed session: 10.45am-12.15pm Thursday 8 September
2. Guided tour OR artmed session: 1.00pm-2.30pm Thursday 8 September
3. Guided tour OR artmed session: 2.45pm-4.00pm Thursday 8 September
